Like Jan Mark, Geraldine McCaughrean is a very strong, pithy writer and needed powerful illustrations. I used a similar approach to God's Story, but there wasn't the same space available. The technique, incidentally, is to do the drawing with brush and black ink, but then work back into it with white gouache where necessaruy. The colouring is then done digitally.
