My second Jan Mark
book, and probably the first book where I thought, "You
know, some of these pictures are OK." I can remember so
vividly taking my shoes off and balancing them on the
sloping drawing board to do that illustration with the
mouse. I think I made the mouse up. I still wear boring,
sensible lace up shoes until they fall to bits before I
replace them. Incidentally, notice the lack of outlines.
I went through a stage of not liking outlines. Too
prosaic, I thought. Unfortunately, when you work like I
have here with close cross hatching, although it looks
fine in the hardback version on good paper, when the
paperback comes out, and it's printed on stuff like
toilet paper, it just looks a mess. We live and we
learn.
