Another very early
book, maybe the third or fourth I ever did, and again
there are technical problems with the work. I had a
tentative line, which was probably to do with my
inexperience drawing figures. I met Alan Spooner, the
author, years afterwards: he introduced himself after a
performance of Britten's Albert Herring at the
Nottingham Playhouse. I was singing Albert, and he said
he wasn't sure whether to approach me because I looked
too young to have been the illustrator of his book. I
was about 45 at the time. God bless stage makeup and
kind lighting, say I!
