NATURE
I've had an interesting
few weeks illustrating a series of nine essays on scientific
aspects of music. Not only because the articles themselves were
enlightening, which they were, but because I had a very
challenging tightrope of illustrative style to walk. The editor,
with whom I was mostly dealing, likes the lines in my roughs.
Lots of energy, lots of scribbly lines, that's the ticket.
Unfortunately, the chief designer isn't so hot on the lines; she
likes more 'washy' areas of painting. There is a circle there to
square. All this on top of the problem of trying to find visual
metaphor for an entirely non-visual subject and, you can
imagine, it has not been without its problematic moments. Still,
it's been interesting - and some of them I was reasonably
pleased with. Here are a few:
